In this Apple iPad Review we explain why the Apple iPad 2 isn’t going to replace your laptop, whether that’s Apple’s intention or not we’ll leave that up to you. In my opinion its an entertainment device which has been designed to satisfy all your media wants. If you have found yourself asking “Why do I need an iPad?” your probably looking for the mythical reason to justify the purchase of your new toy. If you were to ask Apple, they would undeniably tell you it is the answer to all your web browsing needs, the virtual Sunday paper for the toilet, a photo album and movie player for the kids, ultimate music management device. All the while still managing to satisfy all your business needs with an intuitive email interface and the multitude of third-party developed apps available from the ever impressive Apple App store.

In Summary the iPad is a touch screen tablet computer, approximately the size of your favourite magazine. The iPad comes in three different variations depending on the Wi-Fi, 3G combination you desire. In this Apple iPad Review we see how Apple has very cleverly retrofitted their famous iPhone and iPod touch software onto the iPad, resulting in a familiar user interface for the vast array of Apple advocates already out there.
With multi touch screen input, navigated by your fingers the iPad’s response time is impeccable. One limitation which we are expecting to be resolved by Apple some time in the near future is the ability to run more than one application at a time. The introduction of Apple multitasking.
Design and Specifications of the iPad
The screen is made of oleophobic-coated glass, the same screen used in the iPhone 3GS, underneath the glass is a LED backlit, 246 mm capacitive touchscreen. As with any Apple device we have come to expect nothing less than absolute perfection in the quality finishes and the iPad is no exception.
Dimensions of the iPad as follows 190 mm wide by 240 mm tall and 12.7 mm thick, weighing in at 680 grams for the 3GS model. The iPad has the same feel as both the iPod Touch and iPhone and uses the same touchscreen OS with an onscreen Qwerty keyboard, don’t be fooled and think you will be able to punch out multitudes of documents. It takes a little getting use to and can be somewhat cumbersome due to the inability to actually feel where your fingers are on the virtual keyboard. An additional physical button on the iPad, something that the iPhone is missing allows you to lock the screen without the accelerometer assuming you would like the screen to be rotated. Very handy, can be seen in the video below by PCMag.
A major draw back about the iPad is the inability to place calls or send TXT message without the use of a VoIP application like Skype. For me, going through the pain of purchasing a SIM card for 3G capability and then not being able to make calls seems counter productive.
So what’s new on the iPad
Default applications such as the Safari web browser, iPod, email, video, Google maps, photos, and YouTube all look and behave like full blown rich applications.

iTunes and App store compatibility is covered in this Apple iPad Review
Needless to say, yes the iPad is 100% compatible with both iTunes and App store, more to the point it’s the rich experience you have when using these online tools.
All the functionality you would expect can be found, including movie rental and purchases, downloading TV series, audio books and access to iTunes U.
With a standard iTunes account you can pay for all media so long as you have your credit card on file with Apple.
Handy Tip: Apple apps that are compatible with both the iPhone and iPad are denoted with a “+” in the iPad app store.
Accessories
Apple has built some add-on accessories to spruce up your iPad experience which we will cover off in the Apple iPad Review these include a Physical keyboard(See below) with an integrated dock which plugs into the 30 pin port at the base of the iPad. A camera connection kit to make up for the lack of integrated camera, also supporting USB and SD card’s for uploading images. Apple also offers a VGA adapter that can connect to an external projector or monitor. Note that video output is only compatible with specific apps such as Apple keynote. Max output res is only 1024 x 768 pixels.
Apps and Functionality
Apples iBook app allows you to browse the ebookstore housed with bestsellers and a massive variety of texts. The iBook store includes content from major publishers such as Hachette, Penguin, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins. Viewing eBooks can be done by popularity and by genre as with iTunes. Free public domain ebooks are also available and transferable onto your iPad via iTunes.
One of the criticisms against the iPad as an ebook reader is its lack of E Ink technology. There are many good reasons why Amazon, Sony, Barnes & Noble don’t use backlit LCDs on their ebook readers. They drain battery life and seriously fatigue the eye as mine are becoming writing this review.

MobileMe
Apple’s MobileMe service gives iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone owners a way to keep email, contacts, and calendars in sync with their computers and other mobile devices without ever having to dock the device. The service costs 119 AUD /year. A web-based photo gallery for your digital photo collection is also included. An Virtual web iDisk service for storing files remotely and a utility for locating the device if you have had a few to many at the pub and mistakenly left it in a cab. A free 60 day trial is available.
iWork
Apple iWork software suite for iPad comprises three apps, each app is offered separately by Apple. The suite includes Pages (word processing), Numbers (spreadsheets), and Keynote (presentations). It’s the first version of the software to run on one of Apple’s portable devices and makes full use of the iPad’s touchscreen.
In closing
So if you have money to burn and want to have the latest and greatest media device hyped by ridiculous amounts of media coverage. Provided you can justify it in your own mind by whatever means. DO IT! It’s one of those devices that just by sitting their on your coffee table makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.
If your looking for a definitive answer you’re not going to find it here. The iPad is heavily subject to personal opinion and uses, we all have different reasons for wanting one now if I could just find my car keys.
